Another common worry among investors is the risk that elevated interest rates pose to the labor market and overall economy. AdvertisementThat difference is that prior cycles have been driven by lending, Elliott said. Lending growth fueled economic expansions and drops in lending led to economic contractions. He said it can act as a hedge against the Fed cutting rates too early with the economy still strong. AdvertisementInvestors can gain exposure to gold through funds like the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and the iShares Gold Trust (IAU).

Bitcoin may start to lose its reputation as a volatile asset. According to Bitwise Asset Management's Matt Hougan, the cryptocurrency's wild price swings have come down substantially over the past decade. "What's driving the bitcoin market right now is a simple demand-supply imbalance," the firm's chief investment officer told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. While Bitwise is betting on bitcoin's growth, ProShares has an ETF looking to profit from losses with its Short Bitcoin Strategy ETF . Hyman's ProShares also operates a long-bitcoin ETF: ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF.

There may be a stronger case to invest in single stocks over exchange-traded funds in the weight loss space. With just two players currently at the forefront of the U.S. obesity drug market, ProShares' Simeon Hyman questions the relevance of weight loss ETFs for investors looking to buy into the industry. "If the benefits are going to incumbents, then maybe there isn't a theme per se that needs to be exploited." Strategas' Sohn also suggested that ETFs based on themes, rather than sectors or indices, might be falling out of favor with investors. These so-called derivative income funds — which include popular covered-call offerings such as the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) — gathered $22 billion in flows last year , according to Morningstar. "I don't see volatility drying up, especially with where inflation is and this being an election year," said Barry Martin, portfolio manager of the Shelton Equity Income Fund (EQTIX) . "Instead of owning a covered call fund, you can buy a dividend fund that's paying 3% in dividend income," said John Rekenthaler, vice president, research at Morningstar. Be tax conscious: Derivative income funds can bring tax complexity because they can spin out income that's subject to short-term capital gains treatment. Comparison shop: Morningstar labels covered call funds and their ilk as "derivative income funds," but each offering will have its quirks, and this could affect its risk-return profile.

As megacap tech stocks continue to fuel the rally on Wall Street, investors appear to be betting even more heavily that the big run for those market leaders will continue. Between the start of December and Feb. 2, tech sector funds brought in about $5.2 billion — more than double the next closest sector — according to Strategas. In fact, cumulative flows into all other sector funds combined have been net negative over the past three months. Not all tech sector funds will include every member of the Magnificent 7. And it still remains the case that bitcoin futures are regulated, and spot bitcoin is not," Simeon Hyman, head of the investment strategy group at ProShares, told CNBC. One theory for why the futures ETF has continued to have success is that there are listed options for bitcoin futures products, but not for the spot products, said Aniket Ullal, head of ETF data and analytics at CFRA. The ProShares futures ETF may also be getting helped by increased action in the futures market itself. To be sure, not all bitcoin futures products are going strong. VanEck announced Jan. 17 that it was liquidating its bitcoin futures ETF.

But there are things to consider before rushing to purchase bitcoin ETFs. 'Better than anything else on the market'While bitcoin carries risk, if you want to add exposure, experts say the new bitcoin ETFs could be worth considering compared to owning bitcoin directly or bitcoin futures ETFs. "These spot bitcoin ETFs are better than anything else on the market," said Armour, referring to other bitcoin investing options. Source: Bloomberg/SEC.govHow will a spot bitcoin trade relative to bitcoin and bitcoin futures? One of the main questions is how well a spot bitcoin ETF will track bitcoin and bitcoin futures. Simeon Hyman, ProShares' global investment strategist who manages the largest bitcoin futures ETF, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) that launched in October 2021, noted that bitcoin futures ETFs have tracked bitcoin "fairly well." Some are concerned that the creation and redemption process that was agreed upon to create spot bitcoin ETFs could result in a bitcoin ETF trading at a premium to its NAV.

Money market funds were a hot item this year, but it may be time to think about shifting some of that cash into other investments. Investors flooded into the funds, bringing the total assets to $5.89 trillion for the week ending Dec. 13, according to the Investment Company Institute. The Crane 100 Money Fund Index currently has an annualized 7-day yield of 5.19%. Yet, if rates go down next year, as expected, the yields in short-term instruments such as money market funds and high-yield savings accounts will follow suit. The firm also likes stocks with high dividend growth and free cash flow , such as Kroger , CVS Health and Qualcomm .

The stock rose nearly 62% in November, even as the crypto exchange reported a decline in third-quarter trading volumes. The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF , which tracks bitcoin futures, rose 7.7% and looked set to touch an over one-year high, while the ProShares Short Bitcoin Strategy ETF that allows traders to bet on a fall in bitcoin futures fell 7.7%. However, the recent rally has sent bitcoin up more than 150% so far in 2023, on course for its best annual performance since 2020.

Shares of bitcoin miners - whose profitability improves as bitcoin climbs - including Riot Platforms (RIOT.O), Marathon Digital (MARA.O) and TeraWulf (WULF.O) rose between 1.7% and 4%. "Higher crypto prices should lead to a boost in transaction volume and transaction revenues for Coinbase as we enter 2024," said CFRA Research analyst Michael Elliott. However, Elliott cautioned the crypto exchange faces both legal challenges and new regulations that are likely to take time to play out and will continue to result in volatility for the stock. The ETF approval bets have helped counter latest concerns after Changpeng Zhao, the founder of the world's largest crypto exchange, stepped down and pleaded guilty to breaking U.S. anti-money laundering laws. Among other gainers were U.S. software developer and bitcoin investor Microstrategy (MSTR.O), up nearly 3.5%, and ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO.P), which added 2.1%.

Industry hopes that position would shift surged in June when BlackRock (BLK.N), which has an almost unbroken record of SEC ETF approvals, filed for a spot bitcoin ETF. Since 2021, the SEC has rejected multiple applications to issue spot bitcoin ETFs, arguing that the cryptocurrency market is vulnerable to manipulation. In August, a federal court ruled that the SEC wrongly rejected Grayscale Investments' application to convert its Bitcoin Trust into a spot bitcoin ETF. SEC chair Gary Gensler said last month that the SEC is evaluating as many as 10 spot bitcoin ETF proposals. The average fee levied on U.S. ETFs currently hovers around 0.54%, but Ark's proposed fee of 0.80% is significantly lower than the 2% that Grayscale currently charges investors on its spot bitcoin trust. If the SEC does approve some or all of the pending spot bitcoin ETF applications in early January, industry participants and analysts expect a fierce battle for market share to follow.
